St. Giles & St. George Academy School project is a new classroom block extension at the St. Giles & St. George C of E Academy in Newcastle. The buildings largely consists of classrooms, with staff offices, circulation areas, and WC facilities. Sutcliffe Consulting Engineers were employed to produce detailed designs, thermal modelling calculations and an SBEM/EPC for the project.
For this project we first carried out a thermal model to determine available fresh air through openable windows, peak temperatures reached, and expected comfort levels within the classrooms. Once thermal modelling and concept design and strategy were complete, this allowed us to progress on to the SBEM calculation, producing a design stage report and draft EPC. We designed a natural ventilation system, hot and cold water services, and low surface temperature radiators throughout with a natural gas boiler system.

The Mechanical and Electrical design services for the new £1m feature reception block included dynamic modelling to achieve a natural ventilation strategy. Initially the Architect wanted to use high level openings to allow for natural ventilation and control potential overheating, after some consideration we advised high and low level openings to promote a stack effect. We proved that this would work using Hevacomp Dynamic Simulator to create an accurate building model and calculate airflows and total hours experienced at peak temperatures.
We provided LTHW heating by air to water heat pumps units which provided heating to the building via underfloor heating. The building is controlled via a central BMS system complete with weather compensation, metering of general lighting and power.

Sutcliffe Consulting Engineers undertook the design co-ordination role for the updates to Sheffield Hallam University. The University’s investment was aimed at supporting high-quality science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) teaching and research.
Sutcliffe Consulting Engineers ensured co-ordination between a separate Mechanical Contractor and Electrical Contractor. Through supervising site meetings, we checked the Contractors drawings and the proposed equipment to ensure compliance with the Universities client representative specification and client criteria.
Improvements included the creation of a stunning new atrium linking the two buildings, with opportunities for galleries, collaborative spaces and social learning, a cutting-edge chemistry lab, and a new engineering area. The design included an inverter driven variable volume AHU interlinked with 18 fume cupboards, thermal wheel and DX heat recovery system.
Facilities include workshops for art, design, engineering, metalwork and jewellery studios and editing suites including an animation studio and dark rooms.
